When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, five-year old me would confidently reply “vegetarian”. Any follow-up questions would make it clear that I meant “veterinarian”, but this younger version of myself really did not see the difference. Some twenty years later, I have now finished my third year of veterinary medicine at Université de Montréal, and I know that “veterinarian” and “vegetarian” are not the same word! At the very beginning of my program, I had my first experiences interacting with dairy cattle, and discovered a species that I absolutely love working with and hope to treat in the future.
Having grown up in Montréal, far from an agricultural setting, I have been seeking out opportunities to better understand the behaviour of my future patients. I think it is important to identify how dairy cattle welfare could be improved and find ways to implement this on the field. I look forward to looking into this over the course of the summer!
